"Mental Issues"

Sweet Jesus…I can’t believe I am writing this….

No, this is not about myself or a friend or even a family member.

This is about…dare I say it….Miley Cyrus. Yup, Miley Cyrus.

Although I try to stay out of the tabloids, when something like the “VMA Miley Cyrus incident” happens, it’s hard to not hear about it.  All day.  For a month.

Anyway, I was on Instagram this morning and I saw a picture of Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s.  You know, the one with her half naked body “twerking” (Am I getting old??...Who else had to google this word??) against Robin Thicke with her tongue hanging out, hair looking like Gwen Stefani in the 90’s, and a foam finger pointing down like a..well…a penis.

As I stared, totally grossed out like 90% of the world, I was flipping through the comments below as well.  And I came across this one:

If you’ve read some of my previous blog posts, you know I have blogged about similar things before.  And it’s comments like these that keep me writing about the same thing.  Maybe one day we’ll live in a world where when someone acts out, they aren’t immediately labelled as having “mental issues.”  Maybe they’re trying to prove something, maybe they’re trying to go against society, maybe they’re seeking attention.  But it is constantly assumed that when someone in the media acts out, they are dealing with a mental illness.

I think part of the problem is that when occurrences like this happen, people are immediately labelled.

Unfortunately, these are all similar words some might use to stereotype an individual with a mental illness.  We are slowly working towards a world where these stereotypes will be demolished.  And one day, we will get there.
