Happy Mental Health Week everyone! One of my most favourite weeks of the year - the week where mental health is promoted and when tons of people start conversation!
When we live in a world where 1 in 5 people have a mental illness, it is very important to start talking and encouraging those to get the help they need.
So what am I doing this week? A few things.
a) Self care - this one is for myself. For the past couple months I'd been struggling really hard with my mental and physical health. A fantastic friend of mine, and fellow Community Correspondent (shout out to my soul sister - Kristin Bower!) surprised me with a care package in the mail. Bubbles, a journal, gum and a few other things. Not only did it make my day, it reminded me how important it is to take care of myself first and foremost. If we don't take care of ourselves first, we can't give our full energy to others.
This week I plan on developing a care package for myself and pulling from it every time I need some "me" time. I'm thinking bubbles for a bubble bath, a diary, chalk, a book etc. I encourage others to do this as well!
b) Coincidentally, 100 Mile House is having their Women's Wellness Fair this Friday and Saturday. As a member of CMHA South Cariboo Division, I will be helping out at the CMHA booth. Personally I feel there is a lot of work to be done in this area, so this is a great start. There will be pamphlets, information handouts, food, and a draw for a wonderful self care gift basket. So if you're in the area, come check it out and say hello :).
c) Social media-ing. Tweeting, Facebooking, blogging, Instagram-ing....all that fun stuff! Its important to spread the word about mental health - get the ball rolling and people talking. I encourage everyone to do so as well! The more we spread the word, the more people come forward and reach out for help.
So again, Happy Mental Health Week! What are you doing this week?
